Chess club marks 50th

The Howick-Pakuranga Chess Club this week celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The club held a banquet at its clubrooms at Howick Bowling Club on Monday which brought to a conclusion eight days of chess commencing with the New Zealand Junior Champs for four days, immediately followed by the Oceania Seniors from July 12 to July 15. Grandmaster Dejan Bojkov was guestspeaker on this night which was attended by past and present club members and visitors from Australia. Special guests was club founder Kenzie Sutton and daughter Pippa.

Others included Auckland Councillor Paul Young, QC Paul Heath, Jim Benson (patron  of NZ Chess Federation), along with many other representatives from the NZ Chess Federation and many former club members.
