It’s autumn in Auckland, almost April and with that, Anzac Day and the appropriate tributes.
On April 25, all New Zealand will acknowledge the sacrifices made by our service men and women in previous conflicts.
As turmoil unfolds in Eastern Europe, it brings to everyone’s attention the horrors of war and I guess makes these tributes even more poignant.
Howick Village Association has commenced its contributions to remembering these sacrifices with the installation of Anzac flags this week on the street banners along Picton Street, Cook Street and Moore Street.
The HVA also has planned a major commemoration in the Fencible walkway beginning on April 20, running until April 24.
Weather permitting, this will be a sound and light tribute in Fencible Walk Park. Having had to postpone/cancel so many events over the last 24 months we are hoping our plans for Anzac Day don’t get scuttled.
Our community consistently demonstrates its support for this event with large annual turnouts at the dawn service on Stockade Hill and the parade down into the Village. We anticipate that support will be seen again this year.
It is this same community loyalty and support that is ensuring many retailers in the Village continue to survive what must be the most challenging 24 months they have seen. To date, we haven’ t witnessed too many casualties in the way of closed businesses because of Covid-19, however I am aware of a number that are struggling.
Our plea to the public of Howick is to please support your local businesses. For years we have had a vibrant little village, we do not want to see it descend into a series of vacant buildings. All businesses are reliant on your support, particularly those newer businesses that may not have established a strong regular clientele.
And of course, all hospitality and cafes. One extra coffee a week from everyone could be the saviour of your favourite café.
