Author and award-winning journalist Ivan Agnew has died.

He was 80. Ivan resided at Bruce McLaren Retirement Village in Howick with his wife Jill. The couple have two daughters, Leonie and Donna.

He died unexpectedly last night following a short illness.

Ivan Agnew’s memory for all things sport was exceptional and his writing was the same.

Ivan was sports editor and a columnist at Howick & Pakuranga Times for many years and continued writing his weekly sports column Agnew’s Angle well after he unplugged his PC at the Times.

Leonie and Donna told the Times today, “Our dad, Ivan Agnew, had Howick in his blood. He spent many decades working at the Howick and Pakuranga Times, honed his sporting prowess at the Howick Bowling Club, sent his kids to local schools, loved the cafes where they knew his name and was never happier than when downing a pint at a local bar.

“He continues this tradition of being a proud Howickian by being buried at Star of the Sea Church on Tuesday, March 14 at 1.30pm.

“Dad was a storyteller, a true original and a family man who will be missed by all.”

The Times will publish a fuller tribute next week. The team at the Times extends its condolences to Jill and the girls and their families.
