Police say they’re investigating a man’s death a week after a vehicle struck a group of people standing on an east Auckland footpath.

Six people were reported to have been injured during the incident, which happened at about 5.30pm on December 10 in Prince Regent Drive, Half Moon Bay.

Photos taken of the scene showed a dark-coloured Volkswagen station wagon parked in the road not far from a damaged bench seat inside a bus stop.

The 22-year-old driver of the vehicle is facing seven charges including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and injures with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He appeared in the Manukau District Court the following day and was granted name suppression.

“Police understand this incident has caused great concern amongst the community, and we are continuing to investigate the circumstances of what took place,” a police spokesperson said earlier.

“We would like to acknowledge the witnesses that have come forward so far to assist our investigation.

“Anyone who has not yet made contact with police is asked to get in touch.”

On December 18 police said they’re now investigating a sudden death a week since the collision happened.

“Five people were hospitalised at the time of the incident, including an elderly man, who was located near the scene of the incident.

“Police are still working to establish the nature of his involvement, but sadly, this man died in hospital yesterday.

“Police are treating the man’s death as unexplained, and further enquiries will need to be carried out around any involvement he had in the incident. This will include a post-mortem examination.

“At this stage police are not in position to formally release any further details about the man.

“We are making sure there is support available to his family.

“All other victims have now been released from hospital.

“Anyone who witnessed events and has not yet contacted police is asked to get in touch.”
