The Macleans College girls’ team struck badminton gold at the New Zealand Secondary School Championships.

The boys’ team picked up a well-earned bronze at the same competition.

The premier girls’ and boys’ badminton teams flew to Wellington on Sunday August 28 to compete in the National New Zealand Secondary School Championships in Porirua.

The tournament was a four-day event starting at 9am and finishing at 9pm daily with schools from across the country competing against each other.

The boys played eight matches in total in the first division category, of which they won six facing tough competition throughout the week.

As a result, the boys placed third and were awarded bronze.

Their tie against Wellington College played on Wednesday can be viewed on Whakaata Māori. The final score was a 6-0 win to the Macleans College boys’ team.

The girls won all their matches, bringing home the cup for the girls’ division one category.

Their gold medals were well deserved after a gruelling final against Palmerston North Girls’ High School 2, resulting in a 5-1 win by the Macleans College girls’ team. The final was also filmed by Whakaata Māori.

The intensity of the tournament was a testament to the players’ drive, determination and stamina that pushed them to their limits, with back-to-back ties lasting more than nine hours on several days during this championship.

The players were Melody Cai (Kupe House), Alicia Cao (Upham), Mia Xu (Mansfield), Rosie Yang (Kupe), Josephine Zhao (Mansfield), Billy Li (Snell), Kylin Li (Rutherford), Alex Liu (Upham), Eric Lu (Rutherford), Joseph Wu (Te Kanawa) and Max Wu (Snell).
