White Fern Molly Penfold was back in action for the HPCC premier women at the weekend after her tour to South Africa with the national side.

A comprehensive outright win for the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club (HPCC) premier men and a close defeat for the premier women rounded out a mixed bag of results for the east Auckland club.

Premier Men

After batting themselves into a strong position on day one of their first Tom Hellaby Two-Day match of the season against Kumeu last week, the premier men were back at Huapai Domain to finish the job.

The HPCC men declared without facing a ball on day two, holding a lead of 207 runs with an innings to spare.

It was clear that the east Auckland men didn’t want to mess around, wrapping up the match just 37 overs into the day.

They bowled Kumeu out for just 67 runs to claim an outright win by an innings and 140 runs.

Spinner Harmeet Singh was the pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets for only 25 runs, accompanied by Sam Molloy who had impressive figures of three wickets for nine runs.

Taine Jolley, Azharudin Lambat and Caine Bethune each picked up one wicket.

HPCC have shot to the top of the table after their dominant victory and look to build on their impressive start to the season against Birkenhead City in another away match over the next two weekends.

Premier Women

It was a welcome return to club cricket for the HPCC premier women’s (Llamas) domestic cricketers, with seven of them coming into the side for their round two Prichard Cup limited overs match.

The squad also strengthened by the inclusion of White Fern Molly Penfold, who recently returned from a tour of South Africa with the national side.

In a re-match of last year’s final, the Llamas played host to Cornwall, with their own line-up of domestic players.

Howick Pakuranga bowled first and limited Cornwall to 129 runs for the loss of eight wickets off 40 overs.

White Fern Penfold took two wickets, and the rest were shared between her sister, Josie, Amberly Parr, Marama Downes, Skye Bowden, Neena Woollaston and Holly Lightbourne.

It proved a difficult day for batting, with the women finding themselves four wickets down and only 24 runs on the board after a top-order collapse.

A middle order fight back, credited to Josie Penfold’s commendable 40*, saw the Llamas requiring 12 runs off 11 overs with one wicket to spare.

It wasn’t to be however, losing their final wicket in the 31st over, eight runs short of a victory.

The women now switch their attention to this weekend, where they’ll have another shot at securing their first victory of the season over Takapuna District at Lloyd Elsmore Park.
