Breastfeeding group La Leche League of Howick celebrated its 50th anniversary at a special morning tea on Saturday, July 31.

Founding La Leche League Howick leader Pat La Roche was thanked for the legacy she and co-leader Valerie Sowerby had left the community.

More than 20 local mothers have since been accredited as La Leche League leaders to offer support, information and encouragement to other women who wish to breastfeed.

Fifty years ago meetings were held in volunteers’ homes.  Today the group meets in the Haseler Hall at All Saints Church on the second Wednesday of the month at 10 am.
