Let’s be honest – window treatments can be tricky. There’s a surprising amount to think about: fabric weight, function, lining, room purpose, style, light control, privacy… the list goes on.
It’s no wonder so many windows remain bare longer than they should!
But here’s the thing – the right window treatments make a massive difference.
They soften a room, help with acoustics, manage temperature, offer privacy, and elevate your decor instantly. They’re the unsung heroes of home styling.
Let’s break it down room by room:
Living Room: Light, Warmth, and Wow
This is the space where you entertain, relax, and spend the most time. It deserves a bit of drama and softness.
My go-to? Layered window treatments. Think elegant sheers for daytime privacy, with block-out drapes to add richness and warmth in the evenings.
Bonus tip: Insulating linings can help reduce heat loss through your windows, especially in east Auckland’s chillier months.

Bedrooms: Make It Sleep-Friendly
If you’ve ever been woken at 5.30am by the sun blazing in – this one’s for you.
Block-out lined curtains or Roman blinds are a must. They not only keep the room dark but also help insulate against both noise and cold.
Want a luxurious feel? Go for floor-to-ceiling curtains for that hotel-at-home vibe.
If you have a small bedroom, mounting Roman blinds up to the cornice keeps things tidy and tailored.
Kitchen: Clean and Clever
Kitchens are high-use and often high-splash. So, let’s keep it practical. Roller blinds in easy-clean fabrics are perfect here.
Want a bit of character? A Roman blind in a spot washable playful print can add personality without being overbearing.
If you’ve got a stunning window or view, consider a minimalist blind that disappears when not needed – function meets style.

Bathrooms: Moisture Matters
Bathrooms need special care. Moisture and fabric don’t always mix well.
That’s why I recommend roller blinds, faux timber venetians, or moisture-resistant Roman blinds.
You can still have softness and style, without the mildew!
Older Homes? Embrace the Character
If your home has beautiful timber windows or quirky shapes, custom-made is key. Ready-made just won’t cut it.
Roman blinds or relaxed linen drapes can preserve character while updating the look.
What’s Right for You?
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to window treatments. It depends on how you live, how you use each space, and – importantly – what you love.
