Tristan Olsen is a game young fella, “up for the challenge and a bit of a laugh”.

The nine-year-old Mellons Bay Primary School student was on a father and son night out with his dad, Alex, and decided it was time he tackled The Apothecary’s legendary New Zealand’s Longest American Hot Dog Challenge.

It’s usually steak night for them both, says Alex, but on this occasion, Tristan chose to taste the whopping 600mm American hot dog offered by the popular Howick bar and restaurant.

Owner of The Apothecary, Ted Waters, filmed Tristan consuming the hot dog and as at today, June 17, the social media post he published about the eat-feat had been viewed more than 184,000 times.

Tristan says Waters also had some good advice before he tucked into the more than half-a-metre-long dog: Eat the sausage first, then the bread with melted cheese, ketchup and mustard, and drink water.

Tristan says it took him about “30 minutes” to down the dog, and “it was a fun thing to do”.

“I was quite chuffed with myself. When we walked home afterwards my stomach felt big.”

He and Alex say the hot dog challenge accomplishment was the talk around Mellons Bay Primary in the following days.

“They were really excited I did it,” Tristan says, of the reaction of his school friends.

Alex describes Tristan as a “community-based” boy, who is involved in lots of activities, including kapa haka and Trees for Survival, and his favourite subject is maths.

On the week that he consumed the lengthy hot dog, he was also player of the day for his Pakuranga United Rugby Club under-10 Hawks side, running out at fullback.

“It was a week of success for him,” says Alex.

Waters says: “Our longest American hot dog challenge has been a lot of fun.

“It’s available every day. If you’d like to have a go, head to our website www.theapothecary.co.nz and book in.

“It’s not for the fainthearted. Give us 24 hours’ notice and we’ll have the beast ready.

“You can choose to enjoy this or share with a friend. Or we can film it for our social media, and if you conquer it, your name, and glory, goes up on our hot dog challenge board,” Waters says.
