Carbon crazy?

Yes we are

Ian George’s assertion (June 22) that New Zealand’s contribution to global CO2 levels is insignificant compared to other countries is misleading and incorrect.

China may contribute 30 per cent of world emissions compared to our 0.17 per cent, but it is home to 290 x our population. Our emissions per capita is almost equal to China, 7.14 metric tons compared to their 7.3 tons. India’s per capita is 1.91 tons. This attitude of “what difference can I make, I’m just one person” is what has got us in the mess we’re in.

New Zealand has a long way to go before we can compare ourselves favourably with other countries.
