Thomas wins ARU most promising coach

Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s U21 Cannons coach Mark Thomas has won the most promising coach award at the 2022 Auckland Rugby Union prizegiving.

Thomas lead the Cannons to the final picking up the Sir Wilson Whineray Challenge Cup and the Whetton Brothers Trophy on the way.

“A very proud moment today to receive the ‘Most Promising Club Rugby Coach of the Year’ award at the Auckland Rugby Awards,” Thomas said.

“Thanks to all those awesome people out there who give up their time, energy and passion; for the good of the game we love and for the future generation of club players, rep players and All Blacks.

“A special thanks to Greta Thomas for supporting me, as I continue to follow my passion.”

U10 SuperChargers win invitational tournament  

The jubilant U10 SuperChargers.

The Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s (PURC) U10 SuperChargers have won the 2022 Grammar Invitational Tournament.

Sunday, August 14, saw Grammar juniors host the inaugural U10 invitational tournament where teams from all over Auckland and North Shore took part.

As an U10 grade the club put forward the SuperChargers to represent PURC who were also supported by fellow players from the Turbos and Nitros.

“Not only did our team conduct themselves impeccably and hero the Pakuranga club but they won the tournament in style,” the club said.

“Without dropping a game on their way to the finals they came up against a very strong Grammar team to take out the tournament in extra time with a golden point.

“A massive effort by the players! Congratulations to you all, you’ve make your club proud!

“Huge thanks to our parents, supporters, team manager Natalie Harvey and the coaching team of Phil Robinson, Mark Baker and Jason Lee.”
