Half Moon Bay fighter Wendell Stanley from Revill’s Boxing Gym in Pakuranga has been selected as one of eight boxers to represent New Zealand at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

It’s been a busy few months for the 21-year-old, with wins in April at the delayed 2021 National championships in Whanganui.

Winning the North Island Golden Gloves in June, with international competition in Thailand as well as beating the Australian #2-ranked boxer at an international tournament in Auckland five days after competing at the Golden Gloves.

It was announced last Thursday that Stanley was part of the squad.

Lance Revill, head coach at Revill’s Gym, is delighted. “I couldn’t be more proud of the young lad who started training in 2015,” said Revill.

“So proud of Wendell. He works so hard on consistently getting better and this is a fantastic achievement for him.”

Stanley flies out next week to Belfast, Northern Ireland, for a training camp with other competing countries at the games, and then it’s on the Commonwealth games starting on July 28.
