An east Aucklander has been awarded one of Rotary International’s highest distinctions in service.

Dr Philly Karani, a senior member of Rotary Club of Somerville and a former District Governor in India, was selected by the Rotary International Board of Directors to receive the ‘Service Above Self Award’ for 2021-22 earlier this month.

The Service Above Self Award honours Rotary members and Rotaractors who help others by volunteering their time and talents. District governors nominate candidates. Up to 150 recipients are selected each year.

In January of 2020, Karani was a Rotary International Representative and chair of the Rotary District 3131 Conference in Pune, India.

A month later (Times, February 11), Karani coordinated an event with a committee of Rotarians, where 32 Rotarians from 12 Rotary Clubs of Rotary International District 3131, India, ventured out on a Rotary Car Rally to cover the length and breadth of New Zealand in a bid to promote fellowship and friendship whilst creating awareness about the service organisation.

Rotarians spent two weeks driving in branded cars. In a social media post, the Rotary Club of Somerville congratulated Karani on his award.

“Well done Rotarian Philly, we are all so proud of you, and your service and devotion to Rotary.”
