UPDATED – Fire in power transformer that closed road extinguished

Emergency services are at the scene of a fire in east Auckland.

Multiple police officers have blocked off part of Chapel Road in Flat Bush today, February 13.

A video of the scene posted to Facebook shows smoke billowing from a structure.

Police say nearby residents are being advised to stay indoors.

A police spokesperson says officers are assisting Fire and Emergency NZ at the intersection of Chapel Road and Ormiston Road following a report of a group of shops on fire, along with a power transformer.

Police were notified of the incident at about 12.50pm.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the area as roadblocks are in place at the intersection of Chapel Road and Ormiston Road.

“Due to the air quality, residents are advised to close their windows and doors and stay inside.

“Pedestrians are also advised to avoid the area and the public is asked to follow instructions from emergency services.”

In an update issued at about 2.55pm, police said the fire was out and residents were free to go about their business.

“Police assisted Fire and Emergency NZ at the intersection of Chapel Road and Ormiston Road earlier this afternoon, following a report of a group of shops on fire, along with a transformer.

“Police would like to thank nearby residents, motorists and pedestrians for their patience and co-operation.”
