Counties Manukau Police say they can confirm two people have died following a fire in a Bucklands Beach house in the early hours of this Thursday morning.
An investigation is underway into how the events unfolded around 2.30am today in Murvale Drive, police say.
Detective inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Va’aelua, of Counties Manukau Police CIB, says a scene examination commenced this morning, October 2.
“Our investigation is still at the very early stages and police need to work methodically through the next steps.”
It’s expected police will remain at the property over the coming days, he says.
“Our priority is on carefully extracting the two deceased from the scene, and from there a post-mortem examination will need to be carried out.
“We’re unable to release further information about those who have died as the formal identification process has not yet begun,” Va’aelua says.
The investigation will work to establish how the fire occurred.
“We appreciate the community will have questions about how this has occurred, and this will now be the focus for investigators.”
Va’aelua says enquiries so far have established there were five occupants in the two-storey Murvale Drive residence at the time.
Two occupants remain in hospital, he says.
“Police will be speaking with nearby residents as part of enquiries, but we ask anyone with information to contact us.”
Members of the public with information can contact police online or call 105 using the case reference number 251002/9501.
