A man has died in hospital after allegedly being assaulted at a bus stop last weekend, Counties Manukau Police say.
Police say they’ve been investigating the events surrounding the man being located with injuries on April 27, while another man was due to appear in court today, May 1.
Detective senior sergeant Mike Hayward, of Counties Manukau Police CIB, says the now deceased man was initially located at a bus stop on Great South Road, Papatoetoe, at around 2.15pm last Sunday.
“The man was unconscious with a serious head injury and was later transferred to intensive care at Auckland City Hospital.
“Sadly, the man, who is in his 60s, succumbed to injuries last night,” Hayward says.
Police say they’ve been investigating how he sustained the injuries.
“A 34-year-old man has since been arrested and charged with assault,” Hayward says.
That man was appearing in the Manukau District Court today, he says.
Hayward says further charges may be laid in due course.
Police are limited in commenting further publicly given the matter is before the court, Hayward says.
“What I can say is that police are not treating this as a random event and we’re aware both men have previously interacted with each other.
“Nonetheless, this incident has resulted in a tragic outcome with the loss of a life.”
Police say they’re not able to release the victim’s name at this stage.
“We’re ensuring there is support available for the family at this difficult time,” Hayward says.
The man’s death follows the killing of 33-year-old student Kyle Whorrall at a bus stop in the Auckland suburb of St Johns on April 19.
Two people have been arrested and charged in relation to that incident.
