East Auckland’s Boston Moke is making a name for himself in the fast-growing sport of freestyle scootering, and he’s currently the only New Zealander on a full contract with international scooter brand Root Industries.
What began as a hobby for the talented year 11 Howick College pupil prior to the Covid-19 lockdowns has developed into a serious sporting pathway.
He now travels regularly to Australia for events, promotional shoots, and gear testing.
As part of his sponsorship, Boston has early access to prototype equipment and represents the Australian-based company at major competitions across the region.
“I’ve been riding since just before Covid hit, and I’ve been hooked ever since,” he says.
“Getting signed by Root Industries was a huge moment. They’ve been really supportive and it’s been amazing being part of their team.”

His passion lies in park-style riding, which involves high-speed aerial tricks over ramps, boxes, and bowls.
It’s a contrast to the street-style side of the sport, which is based around urban obstacles such as rails and ledges.
Boston’s favourite training ground is The Village Indoor Skatepark in Brisbane, Australia, a well-known hub for elite riders.
With a string of competition successes already under his belt, his freestyle resume includes winning the New Zealand 13-and-under Street Championship, a top-10 ranking in the 17-and-under division at the Oceania Championships, and a standout first-place finish in the Open Men’s division at last year’s SonSk8 Winter Series.

He was hoping to compete this month in the 2025 Oceania Championships in Brisbane, but was unable to take part as its dates were changed.
Looking ahead, his ambitions extend even further.
“One of my big goals is to represent New Zealand at the World Championships, and if scootering ever becomes an Olympic sport, I’d love to be part of that too.”
Outside of competition, Boston shares much of his riding through social media, with a growing following on TikTok and Instagram (@boston.moke), where he connects with riders and fans around the world.
Howick College says it’s proud to support his achievements and looks forward to following his continued success on the international stage.
