People who are travelling within or outside Auckland today and over the weekend should take care as there’s some wild weather on the way.

The MetService weather forecasting agency has issued an ‘Orange’ heavy rain warning for Auckland, including Great Barrier Island, and Northland from 9am to 10pm today, July 11.

The forecast includes 60-90mm of rain on top of what’s already fallen, it says.

“Peak rates of 20mm-30mm/h are expected this afternoon and evening.

“Low chance of upgrading to a ‘Red’ warning. Streams and rivers may rise rapidly.

“Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible.

“Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously.”

There is also a strong wind watch in place for Auckland and Northland from 2pm to 9pm today.

“Northerly winds may approach severe gale in exposed places. Moderate chance of upgrading to a warning.”

Auckland Council is asking residents to plan ahead for a rainy commute home with the wintery weather to continue throughout the day and much of tonight.

The peak of the rain expected to hit during the commute home later this evening.

A front is moving across the country on Friday and Saturday morning bringing heavy rain and gales to many areas, including Auckland.

Auckland Emergency Management general manager Adam Maggs says now is the time to prepare and plan ahead.

“As well as a windy day today, we’re expecting a few heavy showers during Friday, with the greatest risk of downpours between about 6pm and 10pm.

“This may be when many Aucklanders will be heading home or on the road, so drive safely, plan your journey and avoid or take special care in low-lying areas.

“And never drive in floodwaters. Remember, you can download the MetService app to keep an eye on local weather conditions and receive important notifications.

“Also make www.MetService.com a favourite for the latest weather updates, including the Rain Radar.

“Stay safe and keep in touch with whānau and friends, and if you feel you or your property are at risk, don’t hesitate – call 111 immediately.”

People can also visit the Auckland Emergency Management website or the Get Ready website for advice on getting your household prepared for an emergency.

What Aucklanders can do:

  • If travelling today, plan your journey, drive to the conditions and allow extra time. Drive carefully and never drive through floodwater.
  • Stay up to date with weather forecasts and check Auckland Transport’s and NZTA’s journey planners for any public transport and roading disruption.
  • Keep drains and gutters on your property clear. For blockages or issues with the public stormwater network, phone the council on 09 301 0101.
  • Bring rubbish, recycling and foodscraps bins in as soon as you can after they’re emptied.
  • For tree damage on public land, go to the council’s website and ‘report a problem’ online.
  • Check your emergency readiness supplies, just in case of power outages.
