The Howick Gymnastics Club Annual Recreational Competition has attracted a record number of entries this year.

Some 425 competitors from across Auckland will compete in the two-day event designed to give the region’s recreational gymnasts a chance to show off the skills.

“This is a big time of year for gymnastics when competitions are held nationwide for gymnasts of all levels,” says Howick Gymnastics Club centre manager Miranda Beattie.

“It’s fantastic that our recreational event has attracted so many entries this year. That’s great for our club and great for the sport.”

Boys and girls aged 5-17 years will compete in artistic gymnastics and tumbling on July 27 and 28 and are judged on the skills they have mastered, artistry and form.

“It’s a chance for the competitors to show off their routines, for parents to see the progress their children have made, and for everyone to have some fun which is so important in keeping kids excited and motivated about sport,” she says.

Miranda  says competitions are an important fundraiser for the club that relies on the support of the community to keep operating.

“We’ve had tough times of late that have tested the club, which has been a part of the local community for more than 40 years. We’re thrilled and very grateful that this competition is so well supported and invite anyone interested in gymnastics to drop by the club and take a look.”
