There was a fantastic turnout of people who’ve had an association with Cockle Bay Tennis Club over the past half-century at its golden jubilee party last Saturday.

More than 100 present and former members enjoyed the 50th anniversary event at the clubrooms at Meadowland Reserve on August 30.

Special guest Rohan West, the chief executive of Tennis Auckland, congratulated the club on its magnificent milestone, as did Howick Local Board chair Damian Light.

In a very enjoyable moment for the attendees, former popular Mayor of Howick, Morrin Cooper, 90, who’s had a long association with Cockle Bay Tennis since its inception, played the club Happy Birthday on his pocket trumpet.

Former club member Phillipa Collins, who travelled from her home in Queensland, had the honour of cutting the 50th anniversary cake.

It’s a momentous half-century celebration for Cockle Bay Tennis Club, which started at Howick College on concrete asphalt courts with plenty of enthusiasm in 1974/1975, to now be well-established at its modern-era clubrooms and all-weather courts next door to Howick Squash and Howick Softball.
