A popular children’s playground in east Auckland is out of action after it was damaged by a fire that’s been referred to police for investigation.

A police spokesperson says they’ve been notified by Fire and Emergency NZ about a “small fire” that took place on the night of Saturday, August 23, at Mission Heights Reserve in Flat Bush.

“Police will need to review information provided to determine any next steps in this matter.”

Howick Local Board chairperson Damian Light has visited the scene of the fire at the reserve in Packspur Drive.

Damage to the playground is obvious with large parts of its equipment having been destroyed or damaged in the fire.

He says: “We were very disappointed to learn it appears someone has vandalised one of our local playgrounds over the weekend.

“It’s particularly worrying that fire was used as not only does this deprive local children of opportunities, but it could also have put the entire neighbourhood at risk if the bush had caught fire.

“We’re grateful for the quick actions of Fire and Emergency NZ in dealing with the incident.

“We know we don’t have enough play opportunities for our growing population and we’ve just lost another asset for our tamariki (children).

“Sadly, the Howick Local Board will probably need to fund the replacement out of our existing limited budget which means another renewal won’t happen somewhere else.

“It’s the children who are missing out, which is unfair.”

Tape has been placed around both ends of the playground to block off access to it.

Auckland Council head of area operations parks and community facilities Julie Pickering says the council is aware of the fire, which resulted in some playground equipment being damaged.

“Fire and Emergency NZ attended the fire on the night and have referred the incident to police.

“We’ve cordoned off the area damaged by fire for public safety.

“Vandalism to Auckland Council facilities can be reported through the Report a Problem tool on the Auckland Council website.”
