Oliver Picken, left, and Felix Xie battle it out in the Poppies Chess Challenge in Howick.

It was a six game Blitz match between young Candidate Masters Oliver Picken (17) and Felix Xie (13).

Felix has had an excellent year with his standout results being 3rd= in the main NZ Chess Championships held in Palmerston North last January.

He followed this up by winning the NZ Rapid Championship held directly after the main event.

He also tied 1= at the North Island Championship in Wellington over Easter. He currently plays at North Shore Chess Club.

Oliver has had some very good results in junior events and tied for 2= place in the Christmas tournament held by the local Howick-Pakuranga Chess Club last December.

The match was very hard fought and the final score of 3.5 – 2.5 in favour of Felix could easily have been 3 all if Oliver had held his last game.

This was the third in the series of Poppies Chess Challenge matches to celebrate the World Chess Federation International Chess Day.

It was sponsored by the Howick- Pakuranga Chess Club and the Howick Village Business Association.
