The 2025 Bangers to Bluff fundraising car rally has finally crossed the finish line at the bottom of the South Island.

All of the “bangers” involved successfully completed the 12-day journey from east Auckland via some of New Zealand’s most scenic and remote backroads.

The vehicles used had to either be purchased for less than $2000, have been donated, or be an ex-family car or obtained from a sponsor.

Since then, a cheque for $72,000 has been presented by Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay (RHMB) president Marie Raos and the event’s organiser Ian Thomsen to Neil Woodhams, president of Multiple Sclerosis New Zealand (MSNZ).

During the recent drive south the rally’s participants enjoyed meeting Pakuranga MP and Health Minister Simeon Brown on the forecourt of Parliament, followed by a visit in his office.

They then made it onto the ferry to cross Cook Strait and journey on through locations including Akaroa and Motueka, taking in the local charm before embarking on the final leg down the Catlins Coast to Bluff.

Spirits were high as teams celebrated the end of another fun-filled and meaningful rally, raising funds for MSNZ and Rotary-supported community and youth programs.

Organised by RHMB, Bangers to Bluff has grown from a quirky concept into a cherished annual event full of camaraderie, laughter, and a shared commitment to doing good.

“With entries strictly limited to 16 teams each year, the rally maintains a friendly, inclusive atmosphere that’s open to adventurers of all ages from schoolkids to seniors,” the club says.

“Looking ahead, excitement is already building for next year’s event, which marks the rally’s 10th anniversary.

“To celebrate the milestone, organisers are promising a special route packed with new highlights, including the East Cape of the North Island and an optional journey through the legendary Molesworth Station in the South Island.”

The fundraising car rally attracted a large group of enthusiastic participants.

The 2026 rally will run over 13 days, with the usual mix of stunning scenery, community connection, and light-hearted competition.

Each team travels with the security of a support vehicle and full New Zealand Automobile Association backup if needed, though breakdowns are rare thanks to the careful selection of vehicles.

“We’ve had everything from couples to families and friends of all ages take part,” the club says.

“It’s not a race – it’s a fundraising rally, and we’re proud of what it’s become.”
