The  Howick Pakuranga Marie Raos Ray White Premier men began the second day of their two-day Hedley Howarth fixture at 51/0 in reply to University’s first innings total of 287.

Howick lost its first wicket at 57 when Dan Young was dismissed for 34. Skipper Andrew Morrison joined Bill Walsh and the pair took the score up to 180, before Morrison was sent back to the pavilion for 66.

Things didn’t get any better for University, as Walsh and Brian Barnard batted positively, putting on 113 runs, taking Howick Pakuranga into a first innings lead.

Bill Walsh was dismissed for a chance less century which included 14 fours and a massive six over long on. The Alpacas batted on, finally declaring at 367/9. Barnard scored a swashbuckling 86 in 80 balls including 6 fours and 3 sixes, with Danru Ferns 33* playing a nice cameo at the end.

University played out time and was 60/0 at the close.The match ending in a draw. After HPCC secured first innings points.

The result puts the Alpacas on top of the points table, with two other sides after one round. Next week they face close rivals Papatoetoe at home in what promises to be another testing encounter.
