People are urged to back an effort to support patients being cared for by Tōtara Hospice.
The medical charity provides free specialist end-of-life care to terminally ill people in east and south Auckland.
Its ‘40 for 40 Challenge’ asks people to find 40 friends to give $40 to the organisation, as that is what it costs to feed one patient each day at its inpatient unit.
“That’s nourishment and love for someone at the most important time in their life,” Tōtara Hospice says.
“Now imagine 40 people doing that together. That’s $64,000 raised in one go.
“A simple $40 donation provides not just a meal, but comfort, care, and dignity to someone on their final journey.”
Tōtara Hospice medical director and palliative medicine specialist Dr James Jap says: “End-of-life food is so important.
“We offer small, visually appealing offerings that can brighten up someone’s last days.
“Food gets tailor-made with love and kindness from fresh and local produce in the kitchen that also runs our Aroha Eatery.
“When a family can eat together, even if it isn’t the same thing, it gives everyone a bit of normality and comfort in a time of uncertainty.
“By taking part in the 40 for 40 Challenge you’re helping make a difference at a time when people need it most.”
People who take part are asked to set up their own online fundraising page and share it with family, friends, and workmates.
Donations are then made with all proceeds going to Tōtara Hospice to help its patients and their families in the local community, the organisation says.
“Then, let’s celebrate. Everyone who takes part is invited to a special thank-you lunch with fellow fundraisers on Thursday, May 15, at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club in Orakei.
“You’ll hear from an inspiring guest speaker, and if you’re the top fundraiser on the day, you’ll take home $2500 in House of Travel vouchers.
“Plus, there will be exciting spot prizes throughout the event and an inspiring guest speaker to help fuel your fundraising spirit.
“Our mission is simple – to honour living and dignify dying.
“We’re not asking you to donate, we’re asking you to rally your people.
“Sign up today for 40 for 40 2025 and be part of something truly meaningful.”
