There’ll be delicious food and bubbles, raffles, auctions, plenty of pink and even the chance to win a Mini for a weekend at The Good Home Howick’s upcoming Pink Ribbon fundraiser.
The community-minded gastropub is staging the event from 11am on Sunday, May 25, to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.
It’s being organized by accommodation co-ordinator Donna Holdem and food and beverage manager April Campbell.
“We’ve got raffles and auction items, so people tend to come in and have a look through those, and the trading tables,” Holdem says.
“People who sell things usually donate a percentage of their sales to the fundraiser.
“We go to all the local businesses in Howick and see who’s wanting to donate an item.
“Generally it’s the local Howick area but we go as far as Whitford and Clevedon.
“There’s a couple of people out there who donate regularly every year.”
The Good Home Howick has been running the fundraisers for 10 years and in that time has raised $32,000.
“We generally get a really good response from the community,” Holdem says.
“They’re very supportive. The majority of people wear pink and we get some people who go all out. There are prizes for best-dressed.”
The cost of a ticket to the fundraiser includes a delicious three-course meal.
“There’s always a starer and then we have the main which is a choice of two meals,” Holdem says.
“We do an ‘alternate drop’ with chicken and a vegetarian dish.
“We put them onto the tables and people can change them around.
“We have a dessert which is generally cheese and crackers, and we cater for gluten-free and vegetarians.
“The drinks is an open bar so people can buy their drinks, but there’s bubbles on arrival as well. We’ve got plenty of bubbles donated by Lion Nathan.”
One of the prizes on offer on the day is the chance to win a Mini from East Auckland Mini Garage for a weekend.
There will also be talks by women who’ve experienced breast cancer.
Campbell says The Good Home Howick enjoys staging fundraising events and backing good causes.
“There are a few charities we support and this is one of them.
“We do a luncheon for prostate cancer, the SPCA, Nine Lives Orphanage, and we do a collection for Auckland City Mission at Christmastime.
“We’ve also collected bras for the Pacific Islands in the past so we do as much charity work as we can.”
Tickets to The Good Home’s Pink Ribbon fundraiser cost $75 and must be booked by May 20.
