A popular east Auckland shopping centre will have a strong presence of Korea and its history and culture this weekend.

In collaboration with Arts Out East, the Korean Positive Ageing Charitable Trust (KPACT) is staging Korean Day on Saturday, October 19, at Botany Town Centre’s Conservatory.

The community will be able to enjoy a range of traditional performances, art displays, and hands-on activities suitable for all ages, from 11am to 2pm.

“This event reflects our core values by showcasing Korea’s rich culture, customs, and arts,” says YongRahn Park, founder of KPACT.

“It’s about connecting with local communities while strengthening the cultural identity of Korean people, particularly the younger generation.”

Park sees the event as a bridge between the Korean community and the broader east Auckland public.

“For us, Botany Town Centre feels like home. Hosting Korean Day here not only deepens our community ties, but also gives us the opportunity to share our heritage in a place that’s central to many Korean families,” she says.

“We’ve long wanted to integrate more fully into the local community, and events like this give us the chance to do that.

“I hope participants will leave with happy memories and a newfound understanding of Korean culture.”

Arts Out East and Te Tuhi are also excited about the collaborative nature of the event.

“When YongRahn reached out to us with her vision for a day at Botany Town Centre, we saw an opportunity to bring it to life,” says Ashley Grogan, community programme manager for Arts Out East.

“We’ve been collaborating with KPACT for the past four years, connecting them with creatives and projects to strengthen their ties with the wider community.

“Arts Out East is committed to cultivating a deeper appreciation for Korean culture within the east Auckland community.

“We aim to bring people together to celebrate its richness, offering a platform for cultural exchange that’s immersive and engaging.”

The choice of venue was also deliberate, according to Park.

“Building connections with Botany Town Centre has always been a goal for KPACT,” she says.

“It’s a significant location for our members and a place that embodies the spirit of our community.”

Grogan echoes Park’s sentiment, saying: “This collaboration is about more than just hosting a cultural event. It’s about fostering inclusivity and community connection.

“We aspire to create a space where diverse communities can come together and thrive.”

Whether people are familiar with Korean culture or curious to learn more, Korean Day is an invitation to experience the traditions and cultural richness of Korea right in the heart of east Auckland, the organisers say.
