An organisation that empowers young people to become active in their communities has received a valuable cash injection.

Three local Freemasons Lodges in Howick, No.314, Wairoa No.55, and Pakuranga Lodge No 416, in collaboration with The Howick and Districts Masonic Trust and The Freemasons Charity, donated $4,500 to Youth Project NZ.

The charitable trust, which operates in east and south Auckland, used the money to buy high-vis vests, t-shirts, rubbish nippers and garden gloves.

The funding was intended to enhance the organisation’s litter-removal efforts and provide them with custom t-shirts to be worn by members of its Youth Board.

Youth Project NZ says the donation is part of its commitment to fostering community connections and encouraging young people to take proactive roles in preserving the environment.

“This initiative not only underlines the organisation’s dedication to environmental causes but amplifies the impact of our ongoing clean-up campaigns.

“With their bright new t-shirts, our Youth Board are more visible and united, boosting community awareness.

“The new equipment will further empower our young volunteers to tackle litter more efficiently.”

Youth Project NZ project manager Claire Edmondson says the organisation is “thrilled and incredibly grateful” for the support from the Freemasons.

“This funding not only allows us to expand our existing efforts but also inspires our Youth Board to know their hard work is recognised and valued.

“The partnership between the Freemasons and Youth Project NZ sets an example of how collaborative efforts between organisations and community groups can lead to meaningful environmental change.

“We hope the local community will look out for our enthusiastic young Youth Board volunteers in their distinctive new attire, making a difference one litter pick up at a time.”

The organisation’s Youth Board operates alongside its board of trustees to enrich its governance structure, spur innovation and strengthen Youth Project NZ’s capacity to effectively serve young people.

An example of its work is the massive volunteer clean-up carried out at Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga last year which saw its members remove a staggering 33kg of litter.
