“Random thuggery” – vandal’s rampage at east Auckland beauty clinic

Two east Auckland businesses have been targeted in a shocking act of senseless vandalism.

For reasons that are currently unknown, a person has used rocks to shatter the glass doors of The Beauty Clinic in Ti Rakau Drive, East Tamaki, just after midnight on Easter Monday, April 21.

The same person then tried to throw rocks through the glass doors of the nearby Bare Skin Studio but was unsuccessful. Both businesses are owned by Carman Smith.

The offender’s actions were captured on CCTV, which shows he threw rocks at the glass doors for more than six minutes.

The man was wearing dark trousers with two white stripes running down one leg.

He appeared to be wearing a jacket and a hat, possibly had headphones in his ears, and had a beard.

The rocks he used were taken from a small garden between the two businesses.

The incident has been reported to police.

“It’s absolutely crazy that someone would do something like this,” Carman says.

“It makes us worry a bit once we have the doors fixed if it will happen again.

“I’ve been waking up every 30 minutes to check the cameras from home to check if they’re breaking in again or if there’s any suspicious activity around the clinic through the night.”

A recent post on a community Facebook page about the vandalism drew dozens of comments from people angered by the offender’s actions and upset for Carman.

She says the situation is “exhausting”, but “we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and keep moving forward”.

“We’re really blessed to have such a beautiful client base and community around us.

“The lovely messages of support have been incredible and truly appreciated.”

Her husband Cameron Smith says they’d received a phone call about the building’s alarm going off.

Carman then looked at the security camera footage and saw the offender throwing rocks at the glass doors of Bare Skin Studio.

“We saw he started with that door [of The Beauty Clinic] and threw rocks and smashed it,” Cameron says.

“Then he turned around, picked up rocks, and started throwing them at this door [of Bare Skin Studio]. These doors didn’t smash and then he just walked off.”

It’s hard to tell from the CCTV footage but the man appears to be of average height and build and he may be aged in his 20s or 30s.

“Our first thought was who is this and why would anybody target us,” Cameron says.

“We’ve had hour-long discussions trying to work out who this person could be, or attached to, and we have no idea.

“We’ve never had issues with anyone to the point where they’d want to throw rocks at our windows.

“When we saw he threw rocks at that door [of The Beauty Clinic] first we thought maybe it’s attached to that business, but we don’t know.

“The more we look at it the more we’re thinking it’s just some random thuggery.”

The couple are checking if nearby businesses have CCTV footage that shows the offender and whether he was in a vehicle.

Cameron says the incident has left his wife shaken up.

“She’s up at all hours of the night checking the camera to make sure nothing’s going on.

“Luckily the doors are covered by insurance. The conversation was, ‘run across to Bunnings and buy a piece of plywood and try to do something’, but we’ve got wonderful people around us who helped make phone calls.

“We found out the building has body corporate insurance and that would cover it.

“We managed to get Auckland Glass and they came out and put up a temporary door for us, so that was a massive relief.

“It was also a massive relief that when he broke the doors he didn’t go upstairs.

“He broke them and turned around and came and tried to smash these doors.

“It’s just vandalism and it didn’t look like he wanted to steal anything, which is a blessing as if he’d stolen stuff that would have been a much more serious inconvenience than some doors that were smashed.”

Cameron urges people with information on the incident or the identity of the offender to contact police.

“I think it would be a lot more calming for us if we knew who it was and why they did it.

“If it was some random thing it would sit easier. If it was intentional there are other ways to communicate rather than throwing rocks at a door.

“If someone has got an issue, let’s sit down and talk about it and see if we can sort it out.

“It felt targeted because it was just our two doors [that were damaged], but the more time has passed, there’s just no one, there is no way [that it was].”

A police spokesperson says officers investigated a report of willful damage that occurred overnight on April 21 at a business in Ti Rakau Drive.

“At this stage, police have exhausted all avenues of enquiry, and the case has been filed.

“However, if anyone has any information that could help our enquiries, please update us online at https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105 or call 105.

“Please use the reference number 250421/3756. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
