U3A Pakuranga

This group is for people 55+ years looking to meet new people and continue to learn in interest groups of your choice. Our monthly meeting is on Monday, February 2, at 1.45pm at St Andrews Church, top of Vincent Street, Howick. Our guest speaker with be Max Rawnsley, a retired Barrister and keen climber of volcanic cones. His talk will be about the volcanic activity of Auckland and what he’s learned by climbing those cones. Prospective members are cordially invited.

Yoga Nidra

Join us for a free ‘have a go’ session of Yoga Nidra, at Uxbridge Arts and Culture on Tuesday, February 3, 12.10pm-12.50pm. Yoga Nidra a deeply relaxing guided meditation often called yogic sleep. A calming practice that helps you enter a restful state between waking and sleeping, allowing your body and mind to fully relax and restore. Attendees need to bring a mat and wear comfortable clothes, no bookings required but limited spaces, come early to ensure a spot.

Garage sale
The next sale at the Barn, 747 Pakuranga Road, will be on February 7 beginning at 8am. We’ll have linen at half price and children’s clothes at $2 a bag. All adult summer clothing will be on special with nothing over $4. We’d love to see you there!

Author talk

Come and listen to Richard Webster, who’s been interested in music, writing, magic and hypnotism from the age of 11. Since his 40s, he’s written 170 books. He’s also done numerous talks on hypnotherapy and will be discussing The Positive Uses of Hypnotherapy, including examples of how it can help people stop smoking, control eating habits, gain confidence, control anxiety and stress. The U3A Howick meeting is held at Howick Bowling Club, 33 Selwyn Road, Howick on February 9 starting at 9.30am. Guests welcome. Girl Guides in Botany/Dannemora

Starting for this term Tuesday, February 10, we have places available in our units. Guiding is girl-led. Girls make choices about programmes, lead small teams, plan and run their own activities, and develop confidence and leadership. We foster compassion and awareness of the community, learn about the environment and people around them and take action for a better world. The Dannemora Girl Guide groups meet on a Tuesday at 559 Chapel Road, Eastview Baptist Church building. Pippins five-six years (meet 4.30pm-5.30pm); Brownies seven to 9.5 years (meet 5pm-6.30pm); Guides 12.5 years (meet 6pm-8pm); Rangers 12.5 to 17 years (meet 7pm-9pm). Come down to Botany Library on Wednesday, February 12, from 5pm-7pm and get creative and make your own rainbow tie-dyed ecobag in bright, fun colours that showcase your style. This free workshop for ages 12+ provides all materials and is a sustainable way to express your identity through art.

Free Hungerball

Jump into the fast-paced, high-energy fun of Hungerball, a thrilling mix of football, hockey, and more inside a six-goal inflatable arena. Join us at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Thursday, February 13, from 11.30am-2.30pm. Perfect for ages five+ and all abilities, this free community event lets you play solo, with friends, or with the whole whānau. Everything is provided, just show up ready to play!

Teach English to adult former refugees and migrants

Learn how to teach English to a new adult migrant, helping them to settle successfully in the community. English Language Partners, Auckland South, offers a course which covers six Fridays. Starts February 20, 9.30am-2pm and is open to volunteers who have a good understanding of everyday English and an interest in helping adults develop their English skills. We welcome migrants as well as NZ-born adults who are happy to visit learners in their homes once a week, for an hour or two.
