I immigrated from Taiwan to New Zealand in 1989 at the age of 25, and I’ve now lived in east Auckland for 36 years.
Over the years, I’ve been deeply involved in the cultural and entertainment industries, managing an art gallery, organising Asian concerts and major events, and continually contributing to the community.
I also ran a photolab in Somerville for 20 years, providing photography and printing services to the local community.
In 2018, I was elected as an Auckland Councillor through a by-election in Howick ward, and in 2019, I was re-elected, becoming the Auckland Super-City’s first Asian councillor.
In the most recent election, I narrowly missed re-election, and I’m now running again to continue serving the community and build on past achievements.
My motivation to run again is to help immigrants integrate into the community, give back to society, and serve residents while highlighting the contributions of immigrants.
With years of experience as a councillor and as a former member of the District Health Board, I understand how local government decisions impact everyday life.
I’m also running because, although Asian residents make up over a third of Auckland’s population, there’s currently no Asian councillor, and it’s vital the council reflects our diverse community.
This election, I’m running again for Auckland councillor of the Howick ward to continue building on past achievements, including successfully securing $200 million from Government funding in 2021 for the Eastern Busway and over $80m for the new Flat Bush swimming pool, library, and community centre.
My priorities include improving transport and infrastructure; enhancing community safety through CCTV, street lighting, and stronger patrols; ensuring fiscal transparency with anti-corruption measures; strengthening multicultural representation through an Asian Affairs Committee; and fostering cooperation with sister cities and Government to attract resources for public and commercial development.
I believe east Auckland deserves better transport, safer neighbourhoods, fairer resource distribution, and a council that truly reflects its diverse population.
I’m committed to returning to the council and working tirelessly to achieve these goals. Vote Paul Young.
