A murder charge has been laid following the death of an inmate at Mount Eden Corrections Facility in Auckland on June 27.
“A 32-year-old man has been charged with murder,” Acting Detective Inspector Greg Brand of Auckland City Police criminal investigation branch says.
“Police enquires are ongoing and at this stage and as this matter is before the courts police are unable to comment further.”
The man will appear in the Auckland District Court on July 3.
Police previously said they were treating the death of an inmate at the facility in Auckland as a homicide.
Brand said police were made aware at about 4pm on June 27 of a man who had died at the prison following an incident.
Officers continue to follow positive lines of enquiry, he said.
