A rising rugby union star and former east Auckland school pupil has signed on with the Blues side for the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season.

Exciting Blues midfielder Xavi Taele is a product of the franchise’s development pathway and Saint Kentigern College.

He’s steadily climbed the ranks, representing the Blues at under-17, U18, and captaining the Blues’ U20 side.

He also represented the New Zealand U20’s in 2023 and 2024.

Blues general manager of rugby, Murray Williams, says he welcomes Taele’s commitment to the team.

“Xavi is one of the most promising young backs in the country.

“He’s a smart footballer with a great feel for the game and a hunger to keep improving.

“He’s been part of our environment for a few years now and thoroughly deserves this opportunity. We’re excited to see what he brings.”

Taele says he’s excited to continue his journey with the Blues.

“This club has been a big part of my rugby journey, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep building here.

“I’ve learned so much from the players and coaches around me and I’m looking forward to stepping up and contributing more in 2026.”

The Blues are currently seventh on the Super Rugby Pacific table, having won five matches and lost eight.
