DEFENDING NZ gridiron champions Tamaki Lightning were beaten 20-13 by Metro.

The Lightning led early with touchdown passes from Jim Hunter finding wide receiver Andy Nordine and running back Siliva Ugapo.

However metro came back with two touchdowns to lead 14-13.

Metro’s linebacker stripped the ball and ran 45 yards untouched for the only touchdown of a second half notable for strong defence.

The loss was the Lightning’s first in eight games dating back to last season.

They began this season with a 28-7 win against North Harbour despite losing several key players, including head coach and top player Chris Yunker who has returned to the US. Others include Todd Smargiasso (USA), Ryan Voelker (USA), Oliver Frolich (Switzerland) and Kiwis Matt O’Sullivan and Reagan Hawkes.

Newcomers expected to make an impact include John Mika, Rou Chou-Lee, Ricky Vaauli, Josh Gillanders, Tautalafua Mavaoo and Norweigan Christian Winge.

This Saturday the Lightning face a tough 3pm match against the Hamilton at Blockhouse Bay Reserve.
