Sean McGrath has been shooting guns almost as long as he’s been able to walk.

While most three-year-olds were busy playing with plastic toys, McGrath was out hunting with his dad.

At five-years-old, McGrath got a gun to call his very own.

Now in Year 12, the Howick College student has a long list of achievements to his name.
He recently won big at the Secondary Schools DTL Clay Target Shooting which was attended by more than 300 secondary school girls and boys.

McGrath was the overall boys champion for the two days, winning the NZ two day High Gun Champion title and was named the National Champion for the Single Rise Championship and Trophy. He also took first place in the single barrel championship and third place in the point score championship.

McGrath, who grew up in The Gardens, says what started off as duck shooting practice grew into a love for the sport and he now spends three hours on a Wednesday and all day on most Sundays practicing in spots around the North Island.

“I love shooting, love being out there, love getting in it.”
