BUDDING mathematicians have done themselves proud at an event for Auckland students.

Pupils from East Manukau schools performed well in the competition, which tested the maths skills of young people across a number of year groups.

St Kentigern College, Botany Downs Secondary College and Farm Cove Intermediate were among the several hundred schools that took part.

Teams worked in groups of three or four and answered 20 questions, one at a time, within a 30-minute timeframe.

Year 10 students Matthew Chessum, David Liu, Bryce Baker and Brian Lam of St Kents won the Year 10 category.

The school had two further teams in fifth place.

Farm Cove Intermediate also scored highly, with one team taking out the Year 7 category.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 team from Botany Downs Secondary College was placed third in the competition, achieving a perfect score in the time allowed.

The event was held at the ASB Stadium in Kohimarama, and was sponsored by Casio and the Auckland Mathematical Association.
