IT WAS a “special day” in more ways than one at Howick’s Paparoa Park last Saturday.
As well as witnessing the Howick Hornets demolish the Manurewa Marlins 56-20 in Auckland Rugby League’s Fox Memorial Trophy, it was also the first time Howick Village Radio (88.1FM) has produced an outside broadcast from a major sports event.
The league radio show ran from 2-4.30pm, led by sports broadcaster Phil Dark, the station’s midweek breakfast host.
As well as commentating the action, there were interviews with NZ Rugby League chief executive Jim Doyle, former Kiwis captains Ruben Wiki and Richie Barnett, Hornets founder member Graeme Smith, Manukau Mayor Len Brown and players and coaches.
Hornets chairman Bruce Campbell says it was a “special day” and the Howick club is “very interested in doing more games in the future”.
Howick Village Radio station manager Michael Rowse says: “The Hornets’ members enjoyed having us. There has been a lot of positive feedback. I think they were impressed with how professional we were on the day.
“I’m still grinning from ear to ear. I’m really proud of all our volunteers. This is truly a highlight in Howick Village Radio’s history.”
