Undefeated after two
THE Brian Turner-coached Auckland-Manukau side in the men’s football National Youth League is unbeaten after two rounds.
Last weekend Auckland-Manukau won 3-1 away against Hawke’s Bay United in Napier, with goals by Ross Havilland, Harrison Nash (a penalty) and George Konusi.
The victory against Hawke’s Bay came after defeating Waikato 3-1 in the opening round.
This weekend, Auckland-Manukau has a bye and their next match is against Waitakere United at Riverhills Park, Pakuranga, on Saturday February 13, 2pm.
On Fed Cup duty
THE New Zealand women’s Fed Cup tennis team, with Pakuranga touring professional Sacha Jones, is in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, competing in the Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Group I-II. The New Zealand team also has members Marina Erakovic, Ellen Barry and captain Marcel Vos.
It is Jones’ first top flight competition since injury forced her withdrawal from a wildcard entry in last month’s ASB Classic in Auckland.
New Zealand is in Group I along with Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Thailand and Uzbekistan.
The competition started yesterday and playoffs are on Saturday.
New Zealand is third seeds based on players’ world rankings. Erakovic and Barry both suffered injuries last year and have protected rankings (83 Erakovic, 253 Barry).
