The former Auckland left-arm quick bowler, who moved to Wellington to get more representative play, has been selected for the Blacks Caps squad for their upcoming one-day internationals against Bangladesh.
McKay, recognised as being one of the fastest bowlers on the domestic provincial scene, is thrilled to be picked for the Blacks Caps for the first time because it’s been a long-term goal. He’s determined to put in good performances, so he puts himself in selection contention for the home series against Australia.
Selector Mark Greatbatch says both the one-day and Twenty20 teams announced on Monday have been chosen with an eye to the future. “We’ve picked two sides for Bangladesh, but our mid to long-term focus is on two World Cups, this year’s T20 and next year’s ODI,” he says.
“Andrew McKay has been impressing around the traps for a while.
“He has some good pace about him and we wanted to give him a chance at the next level up, and Peter Ingram has been scoring a lot of runs across all forms of the game. We wanted to give him an opportunity against Bangladesh.
“It’s exciting for him and good reward for some very good performances over a couple of seasons,” says Greatbatch.
