Accolades keep coming for Cho By PJ TAYLOR Thursday, 26 November 2009
TEENAGE golf sensation Cecilia Cho keeps on burning up the fairways and greens. The Pakuranga Country Club player and senior women’s national match-play champion, who has consistently been in the best form of all female golfers in New Zealand this year, has just had a November to remember, even four days before its end. She turned 15 today. The month has included two course records at challenging Auckland clubs. On November 2, Cho was in the Pakuranga team with Mindy Teng and Margaret Rhoades that won the 36-hole Gross Stableford Cup at Maungakiekie, the Mt Roskill course well known for its hills, bush and narrow tree-lined fairways. In the afternoon round, Cho broke the Maungakiekie course record for women with a score of 69. She had previously been the joint holder of the course record with 70. At the champion of champions’ tournament at Pakuranga on November 9, Cho won with a two-round total of 145, which was seven shots ahead of Jesse Hamilton of Maungakiekie on 152. Along with her first prize, Cho was also awarded the Alexander Salver for the top trialist in the province, chosen by the Auckland women’s team panel of selectors. Then, on November 15, Cho’s sizzling 2009 form continued when setting a new female course record of 65 at Pakuranga. She hit seven birdies and went out in 32 on the first nine holes and came home in 33 on the second nine. At a presentation ceremony following the annual general meeting of Auckland Golf on November 19, Cho was named first women’s player in the order of merit for the four northern provinces, Auckland, North Harbour, Bay of Plenty and Waikato. She was also presented with the trophy for Auckland Golf’s woman player of the year (2009), an award she also claimed last year. “One can say Cecilia’s had another outstanding few weeks in her golfing career,” says a proud Pakuranga Country Club women’s club captain Jenny Biggs. “Cecilia has also been named as a finalist in the junior sportswoman of the year category for Counties Manukau Sport’s annual Sporting Excellence Awards on December 10 at TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre. We hope she will do very well.” |
