LOST boys, pirates and pretty girls are the essential ingredients of Peter Pan, the classic tale and childhood fantasy.
And the young actors who can’t wait to fly, leap and dance onto the stage say the National Youth Theatre Company production is loads of fun for the performers and audience.
Thirteen budding thespians from Howick and Pakuranga will join more than 200 other youngsters to bring the stage alive at Auckland’s Aotea Centre on Thursday.
Lauren Rainsford, who attends Howick College, plays a lead pirate called Cecco.
She says the first performances will be for school audiences, with the public able to attend on Friday and Saturday.
“It’s so much fun,” says Lauren. “There are some interesting dances and cool songs, and people act some crazy characters.”
The actors say the audience will love flying antics and the exceptional costumes.
Melissa Moore, of Saint Kentigern College in Pakuranga, plays Tiger Lily and says that the cast has rehearsed in Ponsonby for four months.
Although the Princess of the Tribe of Indians is portrayed as kissing Peter Pan in the famous Disney animation, in this magical Neverland none of the characters are allowed to touch the leader of the Lost Boys.
“If we touch him, he’ll grow up,” explains Melissa.
As well as developing the actors’ dramatic skills, performing on stage will also build their confidence.
Many of the aspiring actors are involved in other live performances.
These include singing, stage challenge, theatre sports, speech, music and drama.
Peter Pan is suitable for all ages, and promises to be fun for everyone from the tiniest tots to the proudest grandparents.
