Children got their skates on, hopped onto a bike or rollerbladed across the playground during Cockle Bay School’s annual wheels day.
Instead of a gold-coin donation, the youngsters were asked to take in a can of food and luxury item to be given to local food banks.
Ginny Gartland, personal assistant to school principal Graeme Lomas, says staff were delighted with the amount of items taken in.
“We probably tripled the collection of cans that we normally do,” says Mrs Gartland.
“It was absolutely wonderful and we were just blown away with parents’ generosity.”
Two trips had to be made to Howick’s All Saints Church to drop off all the goodies to be distributed.
“We wanted the children to be aware some children don’t have Christmas and some children aren’t as lucky as they are,” says Mrs Gartland.
Coming up to Christmas, she would like to encourage other schools and organisations to take the initiative, and collect cans for families who may struggle at this time of year.
“Our children think they live in an area where everybody’s like them and they all have three meals a day.
“But some kids don’t get those wants and sometimes don’t even get the needs. It’s nice that our children are giving back.”
