FOR a bloke who has not been up later than 3am, a 24-hour stint at the controls of a radio station is quite the challenge.
The first thing Andrew Chapman has to overcome, obviously, is to keep his eyes open and not fall asleep on the mike.
He’s pretty confident that he will, and is taking all sorts of advice from far and wide, including from his colleagues at Howick Village Radio (88.1FM), on how to get through his marathon 24-hour show on the station starting from 4pm on Friday.
The 21-year-old is doing the long haul as part of his end-of-degree assignment for his bachelor of communications at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT).
Mr Chapman, who is majoring in radio, will edit the 24-hour coverage down to a 15-minute documentary to be submitted at the conclusion of his three-year degree course.
The former Pakuranga College student, who grew up in Howick, says: “The latest I’ve stayed up to is 3am. When I get really tired in the early hours I’ll be playing dance music.”
Mr Chapman is the 4-7pm drive- time host on Howick Village Radio on Fridays. He also works on the AUT station, Static FM.
He promises this Labour Weekend’s show will be memorable, interesting and informative as he shares some of the day in the studio with the Village Idiots on Friday (7-10pm), DJ Syren (10-11pm) and on Saturday with Tony King on the Budget Breakfast (8am-noon), before finishing the broadcast marathon on the She’ll be Right Show (3-7pm).
Mr Chapman invites listeners to contribute.
He can be contacted on Friday from 4pm at the Howick Village Radio studio.
