Berni de ste Croix-Carter from the Accident Compensation Corporation says: “Local riders are setting up their bikes for shoppers to come and look at. “There’s going to be a sound system, DJ and loads of information about motorcycle safety, as well as the need for motorists to look out for motorbikes.
“Seventy per cent of motorcycles versus motor vehicle collisions at intersections in the Auckland region are the fault of the motor vehicle driver, who didn’t see the motorcyclist or scooter rider.”
Motorcycle ownership in the Auckland region has doubled over the six years 2002 to 2008 and the number of mopeds in the region has increased 300 per cent.
While the national road toll for motorists is decreasing, the number of motorcyclists killed or injured in motorbike crashes is rising. The Auckland region is over represented in these crash statistics.
At the Ride Forever event people can enter a quiz competition to test their knowledge and win petrol vouchers. Riders, road safety educators, local police and riding instructors will answer questions and give advice.
