FIVE Elim Christian College students are dead and two others and a teacher still missing after a river canyoning trip down Mangatepopo River near Tongariro went horribly wrong yesterday.

The group of Year 12 students were part of a group of around 40 from the college enjoying a week of adventure at the Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre (OPC).

Last night bad weather had put an end to search efforts, rescuers hoping to resume today if conditions improve.

It is believed the group became separated from a larger group and swept away by rising waters.

Before the discovery of the five bodies, the school's principal, Murray Burton, confirmed students from his school were among those involved in the canyoning.

He said the students did not show up to be collected along with other students at the end of the activity late in the afternoon.

Mr Burton was informed they were missing about 5.50pm.

"From what I understand they were well equipped for the journey with wetsuits, life jackets and harnesses," he told NZPA.

In a release posted on the school’s website last night,  Board of Trustees chair Danie Vermulen said arrangements were being made to bring staff and other students back today.

“Our prayers are with the students, teachers and their parents,” the statement said.
