BOOTIES, jackets and jumpers are just some of the items donated to the South Auckland Health Foundation’s knitting programme each month.
Howick grandmother Margaret Sinden received a letter of appreciation for her efforts during a recent ceremony.
“We all had a letter,” says Mrs Sinden. “It was amazing what people did. People did sewing as well as knitting all kinds of things. There was a big table piled with garments. It was wonderful to see there was so much done.” She’s been knitting for the foundation since 2003 and loves making a difference to local littlies.
“I had grandchildren here and had lots of different wools left over,” says Mrs Sinden. “I knitted 10 pairs of bootees and it’s gone from there. Some people go into hospital with nothing for their babies whatsoever. It’s a constant struggle for them.”
Nicki Winn of the South Auckland Health Foundation relished the opportunity to thank wool programme participants for their handiwork.
“It was wonderful,” says Ms Winn. “Some of these people donate up to six times a year. We have a very loyal group of knitters.”
“Each parcel has six jackets, hats, a knitted toy, blankets and vests. Multiply that by 377. It’s quite incredible.”
For Mrs Sinden, knitting isn’t a chore – it’s a pleasure. “It’s very relaxing. I find it’s very good for my fingers as I get older. I’m not a TV person and you can very rarely buy anything made of wool unless you pay the earth for it.
“Knitting is a dying art but I did see one or two younger people [at the ceremony],” says Mrs Sinden. “That’s encouraging.”
