Raising road to stop speedsters
Monday, 12 February 2007
• Howick and Pakuranga Times
ROAD narrowing measures have been installed to slow traffic on Howick’s Gills Rd.
The busy route became the subject of attention 18 months ago when residents voiced concerns about speeding drivers and car accidents (
Times
, August 18, 2005).
In the past week raised islands have been constructed to narrow the road, forcing motorists to drop their speed.
Howick city councillor Jami-Lee Ross is pleased with the measures.
He hopes it’ll reduce the overall road speed.
“The speed issue on Gills Rd is quite a problem for the residents. There’s a school very close by and a lot of young people live on that street.”
He says the average speed in Gills Rd is one of the highest in Manukau City for residential streets.
In a bid to reduce crashes and speed, the junction of Gills and Hutchinsons roads will soon become a T-intersection following requests from neighbouring residents.
The project has an estimated cost of $116,000, with construction set to begin in the coming months (

, August 14, 2006).
