Fifi la Belle ship’s cat is the third title in Davey’s series, which explores the adventures of an elegant puss journeying from Parnell to Picton.
Going on holiday is always an adventure and this is no exception for a cat as she is driven through the North Island before boarding the Cook Strait Ferry. Trouble brews when Fifi la Belle is shamefully bundled into a box, which is no place for a ‘cat extraordinaire’.
Her eventual escape gives the puss freedom to explore the ship and create chaos, while her owner Madame la Mousse remains blissfully unaware.
Rich descriptive words will spark the imagination of young readers and clever use of rhyme makes the text lively to read. There are only a couple of lines that may require rehearsal to master before being read to an audience.
Illustrator Christine Ross brings the tale to life, including well- known geographical landmarks adults will recognise, and some well-travelled youngsters may also know. Humorous scenes add fun to the story, such as Fifi la Belle looking disgruntled dressed-up in a pram and also adopting the famous Titanic pose.
Observant youngsters will also enjoy spotting Madame la Mousse who is hidden in scenes while cat antics occur behind her back.
