For the first time in its 60-year history, the Howick Little Theatre is having a garage sale.
Organiser Rae McGregor hopes it will not only raise money, but also create some much-needed space in their prop and storage rooms.
“What we wanted to do was have a clean-out,” she says.
“So much stuff is taking up space that when we started to clear it all out, we thought ‘we have got to have a garage sale’.”
The Great Green Room Garage Sale – named after the room in which it will be staged – will be held on Sunday, February 7, from 8am to noon at the theatre on Sir Lloyd Drive off the Pakuranga Highway.
A treasure trove of unwanted former props will be up for grabs, as well as household items such as a coffee table, a set of new chairs and two chests of drawers.
Some of the more unusual items were once props in past productions, such as a four-foot tall wooden Aussie Santa, a portrait of KFC’s Colonel Sanders and a large wooden cut-out of the front of a car called Bob.
Kitchenware, such as dishes, glasses and silverware, is also being sold, much of it in as-new condition.
“People will get some terrific bargains,” says Mrs McGregor.
Something collectors may be interested in is a Phillips radiogram from the 1950s, made from what Mrs McGregor thinks is blonde oak but she is unsure if it works.
“We haven’t tried it. It’s going on an ‘as-is, where-is’ basis.”
She won’t estimate how much the pieces will raise, but says whatever it is will go a long way to updating the theatre.
