Students from 580 schools from across the country cut, coloured and decorated stars in the Stars for Starship competition, which is run by Mercury Energy.
More than 120,000 works of art were created to help spruce up the walls of the children’s hospital in Grafton during the festive season.
Kate Riley, who is a pupil at Point View School, and Amber Raikuna, of Cockle Bay School, were rewarded for their colourful efforts.
Kate took out top regional honours in the years 0-3 category with her dazzling firebird star, while Amber won the years 4-6 award with a delicate three-dimensional creation.
The girls received $200 each for a class Christmas party and will have their stars hung on Starship’s Christmas tree.
James Munro, Mercury Energy’s general manager, says: “Staff volunteers had a fantastic time hanging up the children’s stars and meeting Starship patients.
“This is the competition’s ninth year but the standard of entries continues to amaze us.
“It’s a real buzz to see how the stars brighten up the hospital, and bring smiles to patients, their families and hospital staff.”
